Vintage SPARKLER POM POM Medallion Aluminum Christmas Tree Star-Band 6 Ft GREAT
"The'Sparkler' Pom Pom Aluminum Christmas Tree". "Star-Band Co Inc of Portsmouth Va" made this tree between 1958 and 1962 and packaged it in a box made by Dixie Container Corporation of Richmond Virginia which predates zip codes. The end flap states this as their model M6614 Sparkler Pom Pom "6 ft Holiday House long needle aluminum Christmas tree". 60 YEAR OLD TREE HAS EXCEPTIONAL RARELY FOUND CHARACTERISTICS AS FOLLOWS. All components are like new even though tree was used some in the past as indicated by the tripod gripper marks biting into the lower two inches of the wood centerpost. Centerpost paint is unblemished except as noted above; two sections fit together well but need pressure to fit flush end to end if desired.
Folding tripod looks perfect and is the same style base used for the rare seven foot Pom Pom Evergleam tree; for best results, fit center pole into gripper portion of tripod and make sure it is truly vertical before adding branches. Symmetry of branches is outstanding in producng a properly assembled appearance. All 61 branches are Pom Pom Medalliion and have paper sleeves in excellent shape; a few sleeves (approx 6) have minor slits from prior insertion of branches and resulting cuts in paper with metal branch rod.
Branches are 21 inches each and are truly spectcular in brightness and configuration as when new; they have glistening shiny silver needles (needles on many trees like this have become dull or corroded in appearance) and are free of crumpling, folding and tearing; loss of needles observed in setting up tree was less than five; on removal of branches, one branch was found to be loose on its wire and was retaped; all others are securely wrapped around wire and have original slightly yellowed cello tape firmly intact. Box is amazingly nice with original staples still in top access was made through the bottom! ; 60 years with any box will produce some issues but ours is very clean, relatively free of aging and very strong yet has minor stains, tape residue, a tape tear in paper, a small corner tear -- overall looks great. Two original documents included are the instructions for assembling and the "Sparkler" trees customer service info, parts order form and a chart on branch styles. From Bill's Antique Christmas Light Site internet: the "Pom-Pom" type of branch, is a feature exclusive to the more costly trees.
The ends of each branch were flared out, giving the tree an extra high level of sparkle and glamour. The pom-poms have suffered over the years in storage, as keeping them compressed for eleven months of each year had a tendency to compress them, and the yearly re-fluffing soon resulted in detached needles. Trees surviving today with their pom-poms intact are a collector's dream. Tree is about 42 inches diameter; box is 25 x 9 x 7.5 inches and weight of all is 5.5 pounds.
