Authentic German Goose Feather Tree, 44 H

These Christmas trees were made of dyed goose feathers which were attached to wires which became the branches for the first artificial trees. In the latter part of the 19th century a growing concern over deforestation caused German officials to ban the use of real trees during the holiday celebrations.

Even in the states President Theodore Roosevelt responded to the diminishing supply of fresh evergreens in America by ordering that no live trees could be used in the White House. The use of artificial trees, mainly goose feather trees, was suddenly fashionable. Dim: 44" H x 27" W, tip to tip of the lowest branches. Base is square wood, with a matte cream painted finish.

The base is marked on the bottom Made in Germany (but it is hard to make out) The bottom of the tree comes out from the base, but they fit together well and the interior of the base has a area that the tree trunk fits in to keep the tree stable. The tree has Candle holding metal pieces at the end of some of the branches, Some ends have wax residue because of this.

Some branches are missing the candle holders. Some of the feathers have dried out a bit and have a slight brown color, but this tree is in really amazing condition considering its age. These feathers are still considered alive and if left in a hot dry area (like an attic) will dry out totally and all turn brown. This tree is part of a wonderful history and will had years of enjoyment if taken proper care of.
